Summer in North Devon: 9 Must-Do Activities

Devon is a fantastic place to live all year around, however, the warm weather of the summer months mean that the choice of activities greatly expands. The good weather we’ve been experiencing this week has got us hyped for all that is to come this summer, and we’re here to share a few of them with you today. There so many beautiful sights to see, foods to indulge in and sun to soak up, so here are just nine must-do activities for anyone spending their summer in glorious North Devon:

1. Curry on the Beach – Barricane Beach

Curry on the Beach is still somewhat of a hidden gem in North Devon, but trust us, it is fantastic. What better way to spend a sunny summers evening than indulging in Sri Lankan curry down on the quaint beach, watching the waves crash before the sunset? Bring along a picnic blanket and a bottle of wine and you have the perfect evening!

2. Geocaching

A few members of our team are keen Geocachers, heading out on an adventure nearly every weekend when the weather is good. Geocaching takes you to all the best sights in and around North Devon, most of which you would have never found otherwise! Pack a picnic and make sure your phone is full of charge and head out searching for those hidden treasures!

3. Hockings Ice Cream

A Hockings ice cream is almost as quintessentially Devonshire as a classic cream tea these days. These magical vans can be spotted in a few well-known locations, such as the Roundswell branch of Sainsburys and along the beach in Instow. The first taste of the indulgent clotted cream ice cream of the year is one of the best feelings, as you know that summer is well on its way!

4. The Big Sheep

The Big Sheep is more of a kid’s attraction, but there is plenty of fun to be had by the adults too! Enjoy a jumping fiesta on the bouncy outdoor pillows, pet the cute farm animals and enjoy the adrenaline rush on the rollercoaster. This is a day out with the kids that you will be just as excited for!

5. Golf

Whether you are a golf pro or not, a spot of this sport of a summers day is a very enjoyable activity. Pros can head to Portmore for an 18-hole game, or the rookies amongst us might be better suited to the pitch and putt at Woolacombe. That’s not to mention the many mini and crazy golf venues located all around! Putt your skills to the test and find out if you could be the next Tiger Woods!

6. Street Food Thursdays

Street Food Thursdays are a real treat, where a few of the local food vans commune on the square in Barnstaple to offer the locals a taste of something truly delicious. From the Mexican heat of Calaca Loca to the crispy pizza from Pig & Olive, everything is a taste sensation. This is an event that we all look forward too, particularly when the sun is shining and you can enjoy the delicacy of your choice on the square.

7. Pizza at sunset

Okay, so the sun does set quite late in the summer months, but when it does, it is a true beauty. Some of the best spots to watch this natural marvel has to be at one of North Devon’s famed beaches. Take your pick from Woolacombe, Saunton, Croyde and pick up a Stoned pizza in Braunton on your way. The story of these pizzas is almost as good as their taste, so be sure to check it out next time you are in the area!

8. Waterfall Walks

You might be surprised to learn that there are a range of waterfalls hidden all over North Devon. A walk along one of these areas proves for a truly magical experience, one of our favourites is Heddons Mouth near Parracombe where you can often see red-breasted robins and other beautiful creatures!

9. Treats For Everyone

One of the latest additions to Barnstaple’s town centre is Treat Time, a cute little café selling a delectable range of Italian gelato flavours. The cake selection is phenomenal and the ice cream puddings, waffles and pancakes will certainly tempt your sweet tooth. The interiors are simply beautiful, and its central location means that you have no excuse to skip this one!
